International exhibition entitled COMPLEXITY is the next installment of the project implemented by prof. Wiesław Łuczaj from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, combining various trends in contemporary geometric art. It is attended by 15 artists from the USA, South Korea and 7 European countries: Austria, France, Spain, Germany, Poland, Switzerland and Italy.
The term "complexity" is usually used to describe something with many parts in a complex arrangement, multi-faceted and difficult to understand. Complexity studies are conducted in most sciences, because the scale of this phenomenon is universal, from the microworld to cosmological scales. Aesthetically, complexity means the different patterns available to visual perception at different levels, and a work of art is more than the mere sum of visual elements.
The exhibition accompanies the 4th International Scientific and Artistic Conference "Geometry in discourse. Discourse in geometry", organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Complutense University in Madrid and the Pro Arte Association in Kielce.

The international exhibition entitled CONCRETE / DISCOURSE / CODE is another part of a recurring project carried out by Prof. Wiesław Łuczaj from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, combining various trends in contemporary geometric art. These trends are hidden in the trinomial title: concrete art (CONCRETE), Discursive Geometry (DISCOURSE) and generative art (CODE).
The exhibition features works by 60 artists from the USA, Canada, South Korea, as well as 12 European countries: Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden.
Their works – originating from the realm of concrete art – touch upon such issues as the work’s matter, color, construction and structure, optical impact of elements, mathematical systems and their corresponding grid, along with other problems relating to form, because this art should be free from any connection with reality (except for the universe or transcendental reality).
As for the works representing the field of Discursive Geometry, they draw inspiration from everyday reality, from its various aspects: daily life, newspapers, magazines, architecture, landscape, cultural texts, artificial life simulators, statistical reports describing social behavior, mapping, databases and many other sources.
Finally, works from the realm of generative art addresses the subject of co-creation of works by computers. They are results of randomness, algorithms and computer codes. The works presented at the exhibition are real-time animations generated and visualized by a computer, which means that the projected images are never repeated.
The intentional multidirectional character of the exhibition indicates the vitality of art expressed in the language of geometry, its evolution, its extension beyond programme-related limitations, and the contemporary play with the theoretical context, regardless of where the artists live and create.

The 4th International GRID Exhibition is a presentation of works by 45 artists from 9 European countries: Austria, Bulgaria, France, Spain, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Hungary and Italy. It is the next installment of a cyclical project in which the presented work is contained in two currents of geometric art - Concrete Art and Discursive Geometry. Previous editions took place at the XS Gallery of the Institute of Fine Arts, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (2014, 2015, 2016). In the last two years, the exhibitions were accompanied by the International Scientific and Artistic Conferences "Geometry in discourse - discourse in geometry", where the issue of the grid was considered in the context of visual arts, design arts and digital media.
Such a clash of two different streams of art requires a common denominator. Concrete Art should be free from any symbolic relations with reality, because lines and colors are concrete things in themselves. On the other hand, Discursive Geometry illustrates various relationships with reality, such as social behavior of people, their participation in culture and art, our everyday life, references to the world of mass media, simulators of artificial life, music, architecture, landscape or cultural texts. The common denominator in the field of imaging is the language of geometry. In the discursive area, the common denominator is the title grid, understood very broadly and ambiguously.
The word "grid" in English refers to the concept of "lattice", "net", "network". In a broader sense, it may define a structure, plan, scheme, arrangement or connections and existing dependencies. In the case of considerations on art, and above all on the image, it is synonymous with the term "composition", it is a means leading to establishing a visual order, an organizing principle. Grid can manifest itself both as an invisible structural skeleton of a work, existing within its tension system, an interaction of axes and directions, but also a directly drawn figure, not only determining a given artifact but also constituting its content. Grid is an inherent feature of the morphology of all artistic forms. It occurs already in ancient times, when Egyptians, Greeks or Romans began to use a mathematical module in the construction of all objects in the field of art and architecture. Later, its form depends on the perspective, i.e. the geometric projection representing a given space. At the beginning of the 20th century, it began to demonstrate its purest form - a diagram of parallel and perpendicular intersecting lines. The avant-garde and the neo-avant-garde make the grid a subject of independence. In postmodern practices, its significance extends to various types of networks, relationships of complex and changing connections situated in all areas of modern life. We understand it as a system that integrates and manages the elements of the structure and the resources of its content. Among other things, it is an inseparable element of the digital environment, it is a matrix on which digital processes are carried out in the field of creating and processing images.
The deliberately assumed multidirectional nature of the exhibition, based on three equal areas KONKRET / DISKURS / GRID, indicates the vitality of art expressed in the language of geometry, its evolution, exceeding the program limits and a contemporary game with the theoretical context in which works of art function. The presented outline of the exhibition, although mostly based on the program and intentions of the authors, should be treated as one of many possible. Theoretical contexts and our (viewers') individual experience can give this art new meanings and create unexpected references and relationships.
